BIG MAMA MONTSE & SWEET MARTA

Dijous, 10 de juny 2021, 19.30 h
ICCIC Auditorium, Via Augusta, 205

Big Mama Montse and Sweet Marta will play together as a duet for the first time to offer a concert with a repertoire ranging from the beginning of blues to the end of the rhythm and blues period.

Women were the main stars of classic blues (1920-30), performing in theaters and traveling companies, and spreading blues across America from small villages to large cities.

The devaluation of money and the economic crisis of the thirties had an impact on the world of entertainment and female blues artists would not become relevant in the musical scene until the emergence of rhythm & blues in the late forties, when major artists such as Dinah Washington, Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker had many hits in the Top 10 radio charts, boosting the recently created Atlantic Records and turning it into a benchmark record company for the style. And it must be acknowledged that the famous female singers who triumphed in the sixties and seventies, in the era of soul, such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Diana Ross, owe a great deal to the singers we have mentioned, as they were the main representatives of rhythm & blues and continuers of the extraordinary saga of the Blues Women.
