Institute of North American
Studies (IEN) Foundation
We are facing a new stage in our story, in which we are paving the way to offer a much closer collaboration with the cultural, business, economic and social spheres of Catalonia and North America in order to continue to play an essential role in encouraging
and improving cultural connections between the two worlds.
The Institute of North American
Studies was created from the
dream of two friends in 1951 as
a private not-for-profit association
which sought to foster cultural
exchange between Catalonia and
the United States of America.
It was established as the Institute
of North American Studies Private
Foundation in 2006.
After almost seven decades of
uninterrupted activity, the IEN
is a fully-rooted institution in the
city of Barcelona that keeps up
with the cultural pulse of Catalan
society on a daily basis and strives
to continue to be a cultural bridge
between Catalonia and the United States.
The Institute of North American Studies Foundation wishes to encourage the study of different spheres of culture, history and politics of the United States of America, promoting the city of Barcelona as a relevant meeting place and a space for the reflection and debate of North American studies, attracting the best experts and international academics.

The emergence of new communication channels has had an enormous impact on the connections between politics, means of communication and social changes in the world. The IEN is interested in fostering the study of this impact on the United States of America, and in examining the changes and transformations in the public sphere and democracy in the USA caused by these new communication channels.
The Institute of North American Studies Foundation is developing activities of general, educational, cultural, scientific and civic interest in order to foster mutual knowledge of life, culture, history and language between Catalonia and the United States of America.
