As part of its commitment to promoting critical thinking, youth engagement, and intercultural dialogue, the Fundació Institut dEstudis Nord-Americans (IEN) leads initiatives that encourage reflection, cooperation, and shared learning across cultures.

In line with its mission to strengthen ties between Catalonia and the United States through education and culture, IEN presents the IEN Debate Competition a project that invites American and Catalan university students to take part in a collaborative debate experience.

This competition, which will take place in Barcelona in Spring 2026, combines academic training, intercultural exchange, and democratic expression. It offers young people a platform to engage in dialogue on global issues, build meaningful relationships, and develop essential skills for active and global citizenship.

Who is it for?

  • American university students currently studying at Catalan institutions.
  • Catalan students involved in university debate clubs or with a strong interest in public speaking.

How will it work?

  • 8 mixed teams: 1 American student + 1 Catalan student per team.

  • Debate topic: Announced in advance and centered on current global social, political, or cultural issues.
  • The program will include public speaking workshops, expert-led sessions, visits to political, cultural, and academic institutions, and team-building and networking activities.
